Military service was one of the traditional prerogatives of the nobility. Nobles were expected to assist their feudal lords with consilium and auxilium. The latter primarily involved military service, either for national defense or as part of a military expedition.
The aristocratic monopoly on violence also manifested itself in all sorts of private violence, such as family feuds and factional strife. With the rise of cities and increasing state formation, the military system also transformed.
The presentation will delve deeper into the practical organisation of the army in the county of Loon, the role of nobles, and the importance of chivalric orders.
