Alden Biesen owns one of the most unique orchards in Flanders. The landscape around the Grand Commandery is one of the few places in Flanders where the typical orchard landscape has remained intact.
Today more than 40 acres of orchards are filled with with 500+ unique species, some of which only to be found in Alden Biesen. Organic farming methods are used to maintain the orchards and in springtime the blossoms are the eye-catchers of the region. At the end of September, the orchard bears its full fruit and is partially harvested. Maintenance of the orchards is supported by the National Orchard Foundation and the Agency for Nature and Forests.
The French and Grand Commander's garden, are a fine example of a typical geometric garden layout like those found in Versailles. Straight lines and trimmed hedges are central here. The unique Alden Biesen rose can also be found here.
The English Park was built by Grand Commander Frans von Reischnach in 1786. Designed by the architect Ghislaine-Joseph Henry, who was responsible for the expansion of the royal palace in Brussels, the ensemble of playful paths forms the counterpart to the French Garden. Characteristic elements such as an artificial river and follies including the imposing bowling green, Roman Minerva temple, cave, Belvedere and prairie garden form a beautiful walking route.
