European activities

Alden Biesen is a European centre and a meeting place for Flemish citizens and other Europeans. From the start our European activity programme focused on international contacts. We started with the organization of European Classes for students in 1986 and continued our activities for teachers and schools as promoters of the European dimension in training and education. After 1995 the Socrates and Leonardo programme from the European Commission brought a broad range of activities to the centre.

The European team in Alden Biesen is responsible for the organization (logistics and content) of the European Classes and a whole series of in-service training days, international contact seminars, international in-service training seminars and colloquia for teachers, heads of schools and adults. Special attention goes to themes like: European citizenship, cultural (build) heritage, ICT and quality care / self-evaluation. These are also themes in the many European projects coordinated by Alden Biesen.

Enthusiastic students, teachers and adults from Flanders and the rest of Europe are a normal sight in the ‘landscape’ of Alden Biesen. Receiving and welcoming people, setting up the logistics for conferences and seminars, creating course programmes, writing applications and coordinating projects, consulting teachers and heads of schools … are part of our tasks. We organize international meetings and contact seminars and try to initiate and stimulate international cooperation between the participants. The variety of activities, the international contacts and the international cooperation we see growing during workshops, dinner or drinks in Alden Biesen make this “European activity plan” a very grateful task.
